Dannilius & Lufferov vs. Man Of Kent & DBSnappa

The first match of the tournament got off to a sticky start. Once we had finally got all four players together after a lot of waiting (DBSnappa I'm looking at you) we headed off for the opening round of Team Slayer, only for it to end in a 9-9 draw. A rematch ensued only to end in dramatic fashion with a second draw at 12-12. It was decided by both teams that we should introduce a half a point system for subsequent ties, otherwise we could have been at it all night!

In the second round, Rocket Race proved to be pretty much a non-event since Danillius & Lufferov had no idea what they were doing so had already lost before they figured out what to do. It also didn't help that Dannilius couldn't drive the Mongoose in a straight line and Lufferov couldn't shoot for toffee! An easy victory for Man of Kent & DBSnappa.

In the final round of Crazy King it was a completely different story as Dannilius & Lufferov stormed to victory. I'm not sure what happened to Man of Kent & DBSnappa in that round, perhaps they were confused by the spectators. I certainly put a few rounds their way by mistake in the heat of battle.

In all it was a great battle and the idea of pairing opposing experience levels together seemed to work really well. If nothing else that should be made clear by the scores! It will be very interesting to see how the league unfolds as the matches are played.

Dannilius & Lufferov vs. jochta & MightyMiniMan

The father and son team got off to a storming start to the league with a 3-0 win. In the first round of team slayer a solid team performance saw them safely to a 13-10 win although it did get a little tense towards the end as they played for time with a 3 kill cushion.

In the second round of Rocket Race, MightyMiniMan steered his team to victory, jochta had little to do as he rode on the back and barely saw the other team throughout the entire match and only loosed off 3 or 4 rockets. The score ended 10-4.

The best came last with a sensational round of Crazy King. jochta & MightyMiniMan took an early lead but lost it around the halfway stage. It then swapped about as each team grabbed a few seconds on each 'hill'. It looked like Dannilius & Lufferov were going to snatch a consolation win as they had 90s on the clock with around a 10s lead. But the final hill fell kindly for their opponents who were both able to grab it unopposed for a last gasp 100-90 win.

A great match, thoroughly enjoyable. Apologies to Dannilius & Lufferov for the gloating between rounds. I've had words :)

Man of Kent & DBSnappa vs. Capt Blacklaw & SilverSparks

Slayer:
A fairly fast-paced match which ended in a surprising draw. There were several moments when both teams were at opposite sides of the map, which is probably why no-one hit 25 before the time ran out.

Rocket Race:
The driving/shooting roles were reversed from the last match, with myself in the front and Ceri manning the rockets.  Surprisingly, given our complete pasting the first time around, we actually won this one quite convincingly.  Finding the Mongoose right off the bat helped.

Crazy King:
We took an early lead on this one, but it all fell apart in the second half with Ceri and I managing to get split up.  Communication between team members was so bad, in fact, that at one point we both got on opposite sides of the same mass driver and collided in mid-air before falling to our respective deaths.  You wouldn't have thought we were sat next to each other, playing on the same screen.

Many thanks to both opponents - especially DBSnappa, who left a mission of GTAIV just to get the match played.

Capt Blacklaw & SilverSparks vs. SomethingWitty & ItShMe

Oh, dear. Where to start...

Slayer:
The first game of the tournament for myself and SilverSparks, and not an auspicious start. An absolute drubbing highlighted that the several months gap between this and our last game may perhaps be an issue. No excuses - we were just crap.

Rocket Race:
Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse... After running past the vehicles at the base, we catapulted ourselves into the middle of the map to grab the Mongoose there. Even after finding the Mongoose, we completely failed to get to a single target - a well-earned 10-0 ass-kicking, there.

Crazy King:
And to cap it all, another defeat. We did slightly better here, but it just wasn't good enough to salvage that last point. The highlight of the match was SilverSparks contesting the hill at the center of the map, ItshMe grabbing the rocket launcher and firing - only to kill both SilverSparks and his own team-mate. A harsh tactic, but it worked - ItshMe was able to retain control of the hill until it moved. A screenshot of that particular moment is available here.
